Artist Spotlight: MACHINE GUN KELLY
If thoughts of Cleveland stir up images of say… Drew Carey, Machine Gun Kelly is out to give Cleveland a whole new look. And we mean out, as in out of jail, after getting cuffed during a recent flash mob gone wild incident. Apparently, when police tell you not to jump up on a table, they mean it. No matter. Now that Kelly’s back in full effect, he’s made it his mission to showcase his lyrical prowess as well as give Ohio a little street cred in the process.
MGK is also gaining major industry leverage as well. After winning back-to-back showcase showdowns at the Apollo, not an easy crowd to win over, Kelly’s mix tapes in been heard in heavy rotation from Syracuse to Sacramento. So much so, that in 2011, MTV called Kelly the Hottest Breakthrough MC of the year and a label bidding war ensued over the debut of Kelly’s first record Lace Up (release date still unannounced). After a bloody battle to sign the young MC, P Diddy walked away with the rapper’s John Hancock on a contract. Not so bad for Kelly. Not so bad for Interscope. Not so bad for Cleveland.
So, whatever your plans are Wednesday, February 8, scratch ‘em. You need to see Kelly wax poetic on the mic. This is going to be one of those shows which, in a few years, is going to give you major bragging rights as in, “Are you kidding? I was at that Key Club show. He gave me his baseball cap.” And if you’re lucky, maybe he just will.
