Burning Man… Wow!
For years, I have heard about the crazy annual event that takes place in Black Rock City over Labor Day weekend. I never took the time to really research it, because I just didn’t think it was “my scene”. Even after agreeing to attend this massive gathering, I barely prepared myself for what was forthcoming.
Now, after dragging myself back to Los Angeles, I can (attempt to) share just how impressive Burning Man really is.
Burning Man is a self-sustaining community. Outside of rangers patrolling the site, and outhouses placed periodically… event-goers are responsible for their own actions, health, and activities. Paper currency is only accepted for purchasing ice & coffee at Center Camp. Everything else (even water) must be brought from the outside world, or bartered from other camps.
Here is a nice overview of Burning Man 2009…

The art & music is overwhelming. Art installations are positioned throughout the playa, and decorated art cars are DRIVING all over the playa. You can get lost roaming around the desert for hours, just looking at everything. On top of that, each camp is blasting a different genre of music. Electronic music (mainly dubstep) is king at Burning Man, but I heard everything from country/western to Bruce Springsteen.
All walks of life are present in Black Rock City as well. Families with young children are camped out next to groups of college kids. My crew had the pleasure of staying in Root Society, the main DJ hub at Burning Man (Big ups to JEFR & Potty Mouth).
The desert is brutal… hot days, cold nights, and blowing sand (understatement of the year, thank god for our RV). But you learn how to survive in it, and that’s what Burning Man is all about.
Being without cell & internet for a week was a challenge unto itself. But it teaches you to be PRESENT. I left my video camera at home for this trip as well, because I wanted to experience everything without a viewfinder in between.
All in all, Burning Man was spectacular. But even as I write this blog, I further realize how indescribable the experience is. I guess you will have to join us next year to realize it for yourself! -Hoss
